Netherlands, The - Amsterdam Old Course - Golf Course Remodelling

This course is believed to be the oldest course in Amsterdam Old Course and also the lowest – being several metres below sea level. In fact, the course itself is below the water level of the surrounding dykes and the water in the golf course dykes has to be periodically pumped out into these surrounding dykes. The course was originally built on an old railway siding and is still owned by the Railways and as such, they are able to build on it. Recently, they have finished construction of an overhead high speed rail link which runs over the course. Due to this new construction it was decided to remodel several holes. As it is an old peat bog, we were unable to construct traditional greens because of the weight of material pushing down on the peat making the greens sink. Therefore, it was decided to construct the greens using polystyrene blocks measuring 1.20m x 0.50m x 4.0m which covered the whole of the putting surface. A 50cm sand and root zone layer was then placed on top and the greens were finished in the normal way.
